American photographer Nate Chappell / Hoatzin! I took this image on a nature photography tour that I led to Sani Lodge in Ecuador last January. This species is thought to be closely related to the first bird - Archaeopteryx. The young of this species have claws which allow them to climb back into the tree if they fall out of the nest. Sani Lodge is owned and run by the local indigenous community providing jobs and an incentive to keep the rainforest intact. Their website is www.sanilodge.com.
